Targeted Sequencing & Gene Panels

Focused sequencing of specific genes or genomic regions for efficient, cost-effective variant detection. Choose amplicon-based panels for speed and depth, or hybrid-capture panels for broader target space and challenging regions.

For fastest panel scoping, include: target genes/regions, organism, sample type, expected variant types, and desired depth/coverage.

Targeted sequencing and gene panel workflow

Why Targeted Sequencing?

Targeted sequencing concentrates reads on the regions you care about, enabling higher depth at lower cost than whole genome sequencing. It is ideal for variant discovery and confirmation, focused surveillance, and studies where defined gene sets drive biological interpretation.

Panel Approaches

  • Amplicon-based panels for rapid turnaround and high depth across targeted loci
  • Hybrid-capture panels for broader target regions, complex targets, and uniformity across panels
  • Custom or off-the-shelf designs for established gene sets or bespoke research targets

Best-Fit Applications

  • Oncology and translational research (somatic variants, hotspots, pathway genes)
  • Microbial and pathogen panels (virulence, resistance, surveillance targets)
  • Pharmacogenomics (PGx) and inherited variant screening in defined gene sets
  • CRISPR edit validation and confirmation of engineered constructs

What You Receive

Deliverables can be tailored to your downstream workflow. Data-only or full analysis options are available.

Data Deliverables

  • FASTQ files and QC summaries
  • Optional alignment files (BAM/CRAM)
  • Coverage summaries across targets

Optional Bioinformatics

  • Variant calling (SNP/indel) and filtering
  • Target region metrics (depth, uniformity, on-target rate)
  • VCF outputs and annotated variant tables (when requested)

Project Scoping Support

  • Recommendations for target size vs depth goals
  • Guidance on panel type (amplicon vs capture)
  • Flexible outputs aligned to your pipeline

Targeted Sequencing FAQ

Quick answers to common panel design and sequencing questions.

What’s the difference between amplicon and hybrid-capture panels?

Amplicon panels use PCR to amplify specific targets and typically provide fast turnaround and very high depth. Hybrid-capture panels use probes to enrich targets and can be better for larger target sets, more uniform coverage, or complex regions depending on design.

Can MR DNA build a fully custom gene panel?

Yes. Provide your gene list (or coordinates/regions), organism, sample type, and target coverage goals. We’ll recommend an approach and scope deliverables to your workflow.

What information should I send to get a quote quickly?

Target gene list (or BED/coordinates), organism, number of samples, sample type and quality expectations, desired depth/coverage, and whether you need data only or bioinformatics/variant interpretation outputs.
